Third Casino Night raising money and awareness for Diversity Center
November 1, 2010
The Diversity Center is having its third Casino Night fundraiser on Oct. 22 at the Dream Inn.
The money raised will go to programs the Diversity Center sponsors, such as the Santa Cruz LGBT Pride Festival, the Triangle Speakers and the Rainbow Veterans of Santa Cruz. The center expects to raise about $15,000 during the event.
“This is our biggest fundraiser event of the year,” said Steph Taylor, development coordinator at the Diversity Center. Last year, 125 people attended and this year about 175 to 200 people are expected.
The Diversity Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to informing the public, promoting health and well-being, and advancing social justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and questioning individuals and their allies in Santa Cruz County.
During the event, there will be blackjack, craps and roulette tables. There will be three one-hour Texas Hold ‘Em Poker tournaments where the top three in each tournament advance.
“Because it is not legal to gamble for money, people turn in their chips for tickets,” Taylor said.
After the poker tournaments, winners will put their tickets in boxes next to the prizes they would like to win, Taylor said. To win a prize, people must be present at the drawing of the tickets at the end of the event.
For the less adventurous, the event will feature a silent auction. Some of the items being auctioned include a Chamberlain West Hollywood stay, two all-day
passes to Universal Studios, a bed and breakfast weekend in Lake Tahoe, lunch for two with John Laird, and a complete auto detailing worth $475 from Volkswagen of Santa Cruz.
